SSP 503: Science and Spirituality

Amit Goswami, Ph.D.

This course offers a history of the conflict between science and spiritual traditions, and ways in which an interpretation between the traditions can be achieved. It reviews the reasons behind the division, and explores the possibility of integrating scientific and spiritual cosmologies with respect to current perspectives of science and spiritual practices for inner growth.

Student Outcomes for This Course

Outcome #1: Students will have a good grasp of the issues involved with the integration of science and spirituality as two major human institutions and about how to build a lasting bridge between them.

Outcome #2: Students should also be able to integrate to a large extent their own split between their scientific and worldly persona and their spiritual being.

Course Sessions and Topics

This course is organized into ten one-hour audio tape sessions. The introductory session on Quantum Yoga is presented in both an audio and video format to better acquaint the student with Dr. Goswami. The ten sessions are organized into a thoughtful effective presentation on this topic. We recommend you study the course tapes in their sequential order:

Session I Quantum Yoga: Can Science and Spirituality be Reconciled?
Session II Cutting through Materialism with the Quantum Sword
Session III Cutting through Materialism with the Quantum Sword
Session IV How Consciousness Creates Biological Order
Session V Evolution and Involution
Session VI Survival and Reincarnation in a Quantum World
Session VII Outer and Inner Creativity
Session VIII The Science of Enlightenment
Session IX Practical Vedanta: The Yoga of Everyday Living
Session X

Phone Conferences – Tuesdays May 8 and May 29, 2007

From 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., Pacific Coast time, all students participate in these conferences with Dr. Goswami. The first conference will also give you an opportunity to clarify any questions you may have about the course. Credit will be given for participating in phone conferences. Each conference has been designed around lectures and topics. See Conference Call Calendar and Teleconference Codes in this guide for the conference calling process.

Topics for First Conference Call – Tuesday, May 8, 2007

(1) Review tapes 1 - 3 and be prepared to discuss basic issues of integration

(2) Be prepared to discuss basic quantum physics

(3) Be prepared to discuss quantum physics and the nature of consciousness

(4) Be prepared to discuss Schrödinger’s cat

Topics for Second Conference Call – Tuesday. May 29, 2007

(1) Review tapes 4 - 8 and be prepared to discuss quantum physics and spirituality

(2) Be prepared to discuss outer and inner cosmology

(3) Be prepared to discuss creativity and integration

Email Discussion Group "quantumquest"

Email discussion groups encourage group discussion on the topics, issues and concepts presented in each course. Students are strongly encouraged to use this discussion forum to share their ideas, insights and questions with one another. A single email message reaches all students and the faculty member at one time. No credit will be given for email participation. This discussion group has also been put in place to help remove some of the geographic isolation which may be felt between students, and add an extra link to the natural and vital bond that develops in any spiritual community. All students with a current email address listed with Holmes Institute are automatically subscribed to the email discussion group for this course. Use this email address:

If you desire to respond to an individual in the group, please use his/her personal email address on your class roster or the Faculty Directory for Spring Quarter 2007.

Lecture Tapes: Listen to tape lectures 1 - 4

Lesson Objectives: By the end of the fifth week, students are able to describe in writing:

Objective #1: Issues describing science and spirituality.

Objective #2: Basic tenets of classical physics and how quantum physics overthrows these tenets.

Objective #3: How science must be based on the primacy of consciousness.

Objective #4: Issues involved with the sacred cosmology that science now supports, especially the doctrine of five bodies of consciousness.

Objective #5: How consciousness creates biological order.

Objective #6: The future of evolution from a primacy-of-consciousness point of view.

Objective #7: The experimental data in support of the new view.

Assessment Experience #1 : Write a paper that addresses 5 questions that will be emailed to you no later than April 30, 2007 . Papers should be 7 double-spaced pages utilizing the questions as guidelines but not restricted to those guidelines. Students are expected to be familiar with and integrate Objectives 1 - 7, as well as the required reading and the tapes. Papers are graded on flow of ideas as well as content. Email submission is preferred. See Faculty Directory for Spring Quarter 2007 in this guide for contact information. Paper is due is due no later than May 14, 2007 .

Course Outline - Weeks 6 through 10

Lesson Objectives: By the end of the tenth week, students are able to:

In your paper, incorporate objectives #8-#10, as appropriate and emphasize your personal integration. Papers should be 12 pages double-spaced. Email submission is preferred. See Faculty Directory for Spring Quarter 2007 in this guide for contact information. Your response must reach Dr. Goswami on or before June 4, 2007.
